What Is Dragon Boat Racing?
Dragon boat racing is a loud and exciting sport that promotes community
spirit as well as fitness. What's more, it's really easy to get involved in and heaps of fun! It
is practised all over Australia at all ages and levels.
Not only is dragon boating one of the
oldest sports in the world today, it is also one of the fastest growing. Originating over 2000 years ago in the Southern provinces
of China. The modern sport of Dragon Boating consists of a long canoe with twenty paddlers who sit ten long and two abreast,
one drummer who sits at the front and keeps time, and a sweep, who stands at the back and steers. For the
boat to move smoothly through the water, all team members need to be paddling in unison and take their timing from the front
two paddlers who are called 'strokes', as they set the stroke rate.
Dragon boating is the ultimate team sport with perfect timing
imperative to a crew’s success. For this reason dragon boat has become a popular team building activity for corporate
days and an enjoyable cross training or social day for people who enjoy a bit of a challenge.
From the social nature of recreational paddling
to the competitiveness of racing, there is something for everyone.
